The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy, founded in 1951, hosts over 1 million members and serves the whole world. It is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. Its mission is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depend on.
The nature conservancy is trying to make a difference worldwide, by working in 35 countries and all 50 states. Their impact has been tremendous, with over 1 million members and 62 years of conservation, leading to more than 119 million acres of land being protected. It is among the world’s largest environmental organizations, measured by the number of members and area protected. It is also a non-profit organization supported mostly by private donations.

The conservancy uses scientific methods to determine where they work and whom they partner up with. The current issues that they are trying to tackle include climate change and availability of fresh water. They also protect a myriad of habitats in order to preserve the variety of life on Earth.

The "Plant a Billion Trees" campaign is an effort of the Nature Conservancy to try and restore 2, 500, 000 acres of land and plant 1 billion trees by 2015 in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil. In fact, each donation amounting to one dollar results in one planted tree in the forest. This effort has been proven to slow climate change, remove 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually and may protect 10 critical watersheds in the Atlantic Forest.
